
Tottenham Hotspur fans have reacted on Twitter to Matt Doherty claiming that he ‘under-performed’ last season.
In truth, the versatile full-back wasn’t the only one who should question his performances from last season because a large majority of this Spurs squad were abject.
But with his former Wolves boss, Nuno Espirito Santo, taking the reigns in North London, he openly admitted that he simply wasn’t good enough in his debut campaign.
Doherty told Tottenham’s official YouTube channel that he is trying to get ‘my form’, his ‘fitness’ and his ‘confidence’ back in pre-season ahead of the new campaign.
Well, the £15 million-rated player (Guardian) has the right man in the dugout because it was Nuno who got the best out of him at Wolves.
Jose Mourinho did occasionally deploy a wing-back system, but whether it was a flat back four, or three at the back, Doherty simply couldn’t get his engine going.
The attack-minded full-back that thrived in the Midlands was a shadow of himself in North London.
And Spurs fans have praised the player for being so open about last season’s displays.
The great thing is that the Republic of Ireland international isn’t the only one who has been critical of his previous performances.
Dele Alli uttered similar words a few weeks ago, as a lot of these Spurs players now aim to address their recent decline.
