Newcastle United have reportedly placed Unai Emery on their three-man managerial shortlist as the hunt to find a successor for Steve Bruce continues.

According to the Times, the Villarreal coach, who currently sit 11th in La Liga, is one of three names Newcastle are exploring. Alongside Emery, Belgium manager Roberto Martine, as well as Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, are also on the shortlist.

Although Emery is known for failing at Arsenal after being named as Arsene Wenger’s successor in 2018, the Spanish manager has enjoyed a successful spell with new side Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine last season beat the Gunners in the UEFA Europa League semi-final before defeating Manchester United in the final in Gdansk on penalties.

Indeed, Emery has enjoyed a great time back in Spain. Moreover, Newcastle are eyeing the former PSG boss to replace Bruce, who looks almost certain to leave the club in the coming weeks.

The Toon were beaten 3-2 by Tottenham over the weekend as Newcastle remain winless in the Premier League this campaign. Furthermore, the northeast side are currently one of the favourites to be relegated.
