Ex-Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has joked that he’s ‘going to come out of retirement’ and ‘try to get a big deal’ at Newcastle United, as he told talkSPORT (13/10/21 at 8:05 am).
A lot of individuals eyes will now open because Newcastle are owned by mega-rich people, with players, managers and agents keeping an eagle-eyed on what is happening.
It has been a week to the day since a Public Investment Fund group in Saudi Arabia took charge of Newcastle.
And it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that the whole of Europe has been linked with the Magpies since, with the rest of the world remaining.
Nonetheless, this is what Agbonlahor had to say about the Newcastle takeover.
“Now I have seen the Newcastle takeover, I am going to make a comeback,” said Agbonlahor. “Try to get a big deal at Newcastle.
“Try and get a couple of hundred grand a week at Newcastle.”
Agbonlahor turned 35 yesterday, but he has been retired for a number of years now and last played in the Premier League in 2016.
Of course, the Englishman’s comments were tongue-in-cheek, but he did score 73 league goals in England’s top-flight during his time on the pitch.
In truth, even at his peak, Newcastle probably wouldn’t push for a player of Agbonlahor’s calibre.
But it will be interesting to see what road the Magpies do go down, whether they push for a British core, the best of the rest in the Premier League, gems from Europe or go all-in straightaway.
