Liverpool have missed out on Timo Werner, and it seems that reports about a new transfer strategy may end up being true.

The Mirror reported last month that Liverpool weren’t planning to make big signings. Instead, they intend to bring in talented youngsters.

Vasco da Gama forward Talles Magno is one target, with the report adding that Liverpool also fancy Mechelen midfielder Aster Vranckx.

The 17-year-old has emerged into the first-team setup this season. With one goal and two assists in nine games, he has made a huge impact.

Liverpool now seemingly want to bring Vranckx to Anfield. They face competition from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Feyenoord though.

Vranckx would be one for the future at Liverpool; possibly a long-term successor to Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield thanks to his ability as a box-to-box player.

Now, former Belgian international and ex-Oostende boss Gert Verheyen has commented on the situation, telling Het Nieuwsblad that he thinks Vranckx is better off staying at Mechelen for now.

Verheyen believes that Vrancks is the ideal midfielder thanks to his vision, athleticism and technique, but doesn’t think he is ready for a ‘top club’ like Club Brugge, never mind Liverpool, and his focus should be on playing.

“That kind of midfielder, a combination of vision, power and technique, is very popular,” said Verheyen. “He can play in three positions in midfield. He can take a ball and pass. But where would such a boy play at a top club like Club Brugge?”

“Someone like Vranckx should only focus on playing. That is why it is better to stay with KV Mechelen. Because he may also experience a relapse, as is often the case with young players,” says Verheyen.
