Glasgow Rangers shave endured a bitterly disappointing campaign this season.

Gers legend Ally McCoist explained how Rangers have to find a way of financing some big money summer transfers if they are to challenge Celtic next season, when speaking live on Sky Sports‘ broadcast of Rangers vs Celtic on Saturday April 29th at 14:22.
Pedro Caixinha’s men were easily swept aside by the Hoops at Ibrox today, in what was one of the most one-sided Old Firm derbies in recent history, with Brendan Rodgers’ team running out comfortable 5-1 winners.
The Portuguese has so much work to do, if he is to guide Rangers to success over the coming years, what with Celtic being so far ahead from both a quality and financial viewpoint.
And McCoist, who played for and managed Rangers, delivered an impassioned rant on what needs to happen at his former club during the summer, when speaking live on Sky Sports‘ broadcast of Rangers vs Celtic on Saturday April 29th:

“I hope so, I really hope so (that Rangers spend heavily this summer). Nothing has changed. Rangers will plod along, finish second or third, maybe get to a cup final. That’s where they will be. But if they want to get back to the level where they once were, competing on a regular basis against Celtic, then they have to spend and find finance. In 2007, with Walter (Smith), the first thing we did was spend money. £2 million on Cuellar, we got Davis for a couple of million, Whittaker, Naismith for a couple of million. If you bring quality in, you’ve got a side capable of winning the league, which they did. The bottom line is, if Rangers do not find finance, it’s going to take them an unbelievably long time to come back and challenge Celtic.”
Quite where Rangers will find any kind of substantial funds for transfers remains to be seen, but it will be highly likely that Caixinha will enter the summer transfer window with little to spend.
And if that is the case, he might well be best served in emulating the job Brendan Rodgers has done at Parkhead by making astute loan signings from England. He could also delve into the free transfer market.
Even if the Gers do manage to bring in a couple of new signings, it still seems as though there is just too much of a gulf in class between them and the Hoops to think that a title challenge could be a realistic prospect next season.
