Tottenham Hotspur have been drawn into an incredibly difficult Champions League group with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and APOEL.
Gerry Francis has told Premier League Daily on Sky Sports (broadcast on 13th September 2017 from 10:00 am) that Tottenham’s tougher Champions League group will probably suit Spurs more than their easier group from last season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men begin their group-stage campaign tonight with a tricky tie against Borussia Dortmund, while Real Madrid and APOEL were also drawn in the group.
Spurs fans would be forgiven for fearing for their chances of getting through the group, especially as they failed to reach the knockout stages last season in a pool consisting of Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow.
But former Tottenham boss Francis has suggested that facing a much stronger group this time around could actually be beneficial for Pochettino’s men.
“Last year they were expected to win those games and they didn’t play very well and they were poor at Wembley. But because they’re perhaps expecting not to win those games, I think that will give the crowd and the players that little bit of extra lift.
“I can see them performing very well in the Champions League.”
If Tottenham are to make it through to the next stages, you would imagine that they will be looking at tonight’s game as a vital one as beating Dortmund at home would surely go a long way to putting the suggestion of a Wembley hoodoo to bed and give them a major confidence boost ahead of the rest of their group games.
