Fernando Llorente has endured a mixed start to life at Tottenham Hotspur, but has received the backing of Gerry Francis.
Gerry Francis has told Sky Sports Daily on Sky Sports (broadcast on October 25th 2017 from 10:00 am) that he thinks that Tottenham made a very smart move signing Fernando Llorente in the summer, ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with West Ham at Wembley.
Llorente was signed on a dramatic deadline day after impressing with Swansea City in his debut season in the Premier League. But while there have been bright moments for the 32-year-old, he goes into the cup clash with the Hammers on Wednesday still awaiting his first goal for Spurs.
But Francis is sure that Llorente will come good and prove to be a great understudy for Harry Kane once he finds his feet amongst Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
“He’s a good target man, he’s clever with his little flicks, obviously strong in the air, and I think it was a good purchase for Tottenham, especially if there are any problems with Harry.
“Obviously, they’re going to protect him if he had a little thigh strain or whatever it may have been, they’re going to protect him because the Premier League’s important. I think he’s [Llorente] really added to the squad.”
Though Llorente is still awaiting his first goal for Spurs, there have been some promising moments along the way – most notably, the performance that he put in when used in a front two alongside Kane in the Bernabeu for their Champions League tie with Real Madrid.
And if he is given the nod for the cup clash with West Ham, he will be hoping to prove that Pochettino can rely on him to step up when Kane is not available by inspiring Tottenham into the next round.
