Glasgow Rangers made it through the first round of Europa League qualifiers, and the Ibrox side had Allan McGregor to partially thank for the result.

Unsurprisingly given the size of the club he has joined, it did not take Steven Gerrard long to make a ruthless decision following his appointment as Rangers boss earlier this summer, with The Scottish Sun reporting earlier this month that Gerrard had decided to make new signing Allan McGregor his first choice goalkeeper for the coming season.
It was a brave call from Gerrard. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Foderingham, but McGregor was in goal for both legs of their Europa League tie with Shkupi while Jak Alnwick has been on the bench.
But based on McGregor’s performances – especially the one in the return leg in Macedonia – it appears that Gerrard has got the decision to make the Scotland international his number one absolutely spot on.

McGregor made a handful of superb saves to keep the game goalless and there could even be an argument that he was Rangers’ best player in the stalemate.
Foderingham could be fantastic at times, but his form seemed to split supporters. It remains to be seen whether McGregor can follow up his brilliant display in Europe during the coming weeks and months, but right now, it does appear that Gerrard may have made a very smart decision seemingly deciding to put his faith in the veteran for his first season at the helm.
