Rangers need to prioritise Nikola Katic over Joe Worrall.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard was always bound to have selection dilemmas at Ibrox, especially after landing 15 signings since his arrival, and his biggest qualm so far has been in central defence.
Gerrard has signed four centre backs so far; Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic arrived in multi-million pound deals, whilst Joe Worrall came in on loan from Nottingham Forest and Gareth McAuley signed as a free agent.
Goldson has been a virtual ever-present, but Gerrard has been chopping and changing between Katic and Worrall, whilst the now-fit McAuley played 45 minutes against Motherwell on Sunday afternoon too.
When it comes to Katic v Worrall, Gerrard appears to have favoured Worrall of late, with the chopping and changing seemingly putting a major dent in Katic’s confidence; after all, he starred in the early stages of his Rangers career following a move from Croatia.
However, Gerrard’s priority has to be Katic. Worrall has already told The Scottish Herald that he is a Nottingham Forest player and doesn’t see himself playing for Rangers beyond the end of the season, when his loan ends.
Yes, there may be certain promises Rangers have made to Forest about Worrall’s playing time, but with no chance of a permanent deal, is it all really worth shattering the confidence of a permanent Rangers player in Katic?
The 21-year-old has been struggling of late, and having a loan player – who has announced his intention to elave Ibrox already – ahead of him in the pecking order will surely be a source of concern.
Katic is the man who will be at Rangers next season and must be prioritised over Worrall, as Rangers have to look after themselves and develop their own players over anybody else’s, and the choice between the two should be clear for Gerrard for that very reason.
