Tony Cascarino has claimed that he can see Steven Gerrard going ‘big’ and bringing Roberto Firmino from Liverpool to Aston Villa.
Gerrard has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Aston Villa.
The 41-year-old has won four of his first seven Premier League outings, losing to Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.
But he has failed to bring the best out of Danny Ings as of yet, with the England international netting only three times in 13 Premier League games this season.
And Cascarino feels that the iconic Liverpool figure could raid his former club for a certain Firmino.
He told talkSPORT: “My gut feeling – I wouldn’t be surprised if Firmino go to Villa. Danny Ings hasn’t worked out for Villa. Doesn’t feel like it’s worked out. Ollie Watkins needs a type of Firmino player to get the best out of him.
“They’re [Villa] going big. People might say ‘Klopp will never let him go’ but he’s been a sub way too often and Jota’s taken his place at Liverpool.”
Going to happen?
In a word, no.
Aston Villa have zero chance of swooping for the Liverpool attacker.
Cascarino is right in saying that Diogo Jota has been playing ahead of him in recent weeks but, remember, the Brazil international is only back from injury.
And Jota happens to be playing very well, too.
Just because Firmino’s on the Liverpool bench a little more often, it isn’t permanent and it certainly doesn’t indicate that he’s up for sale.
The truth is that the 30-year-old is still one of Jurgen Klopp’s best players and without being harsh on Villa, there’s just no chance of him joining them this month.
As recently as October, Klopp said people will ‘write books’ about Firmino as a false nine [Marca].
That right there illustrates that the German manager absolutely loves the former Hoffenheim forward and he just won’t be going to Aston Villa anytime soon.
