Rangers were beaten 2-1 away at Celtic this afternoon.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told Rangers TV that he simply can’t defend striker Alfredo Morelos any longer after his red card against Celtic today.

The Gers made the short trip to Parkhead in the hope of springing a surprise and at least delaying some Celtic title celebrations, but ultimately lost 2-1.

Odsonne Edouard struck the opener for Celtic in a smart breakaway goal, before Rangers striker Morelos was sent off for elbowing Celtic captain Scott Brown.

Rangers did get themselves level in the second half though, as a fine run and finish from Ryan Kent made it 1-1, with Rangers arguably looking the better side.

However, a mistake from James Tavernier was pounced upon, and James Forrest slotted home the winner for Celtic as they clinched a 2-1 victory.

Rangers performed admirably with 10 men, but the fact they were in that situation is ridiculous anyway, as Morelos picked up his fifth red card of the season.

The Colombian allowed himself to be riled up by Brown, and ultimately cost his team, leaving boss Gerrard furious at the full time whistle.

Gerrard admitted that the big decision has been taken to punish Morelos internally, with the Gers boss admitting he simply can’t defend him any more than he already has – but did feel that he learned a lot about his players, in terms of who is with him moving forward.

“Well, 99% of them did,” said Gerrard. “Obviously, again, we’ve been hurt by ill-discipline and falling into the trap of being wound up. A lot of the performance I’m very proud of, I’ve learnt a lot about my players today in terms of who’s with me, and who’s prepared to roll their sleeves up, especially when the challenge got more difficult than it was in the first place.”

“He’s obviously been provoked in the first place, but it’s happened on too many occasions now. I’ve gone above and beyond, and I’ve backed Alfredo more than enough, and I can’t defend him any more, is the reality. He’ll be punished internally for it and we’ll move forward,” he added.
