Gerrard says Rangers fans really don’t appreciate how good one player is

Steven Gerrard has lavished praise on captain James Tavernier and claims that even some Rangers fans don’t appreciate how good he is.

The 28-year-old has started his sixth season with the Gers following a move under Mark Warburton in 2015.

In his first season, Tavernier, a right-back, scored 15 goals and set up 23 in all competitions as Rangers secured their long-awaited Premiership return after being demoted to the fourth tier in 2012.

Gerrard appointed the English defender as his skipper in July of 2018 following Lee Wallace’s departure.

And the light Blues boss has spoke glowingly about the player, but warned that he might need to win a trophy before he starts getting the respect he deserves – in and outside of Ibrox.

He told Rangers TV: “Tav is a huge player. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves from our own supporters, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves from outside.

“He needs to go and win something as a captain, as a leader, to get the credit he deserves but to see him on a daily basis I’m certainly someone who really appreciates having him for us.”

Tavernier absolutely does need to win a trophy and, at this stage, there’s only one that’ll do.

Celtic are going for 10 Scottish Premiership titles in a row and if Rangers don’t win the league, it’ll be disastrous for Gerrard, Tavernier and every fan of the Glasgow club.

It really doesn’t matter if Gerrard wins both cup competitions and gets his side to the semi-final of the Europa League – he has to win the Premiership and hopefully Tavernier can inspire that.
