Steven Gerrard has told Sky Sports News that Alfredo Morelos is looking like a much more interested player in training these days.
The linked-away Ibrox hitman was controversially left out of the Gers’ squad that beat Kilmarnock 2-0 last weekend.
The Rangers manager told reporters after the game that it was a ‘pretty simple’ decision to omit the Colombian striker based on his work ethic behind the scenes.
Gerrard’s side are back in action away to Hamilton tomorrow evening and although Morelos remains heavily linked with a move away from Glasgow, the boss has hinted that he could be involved after revealing that his training-ground application has improved since last weekend.
Gerrard said: “What I will say is that we’ve definitely seen a difference in his application. He has re-focused himself into training and is working hard this week, but it’s a decision [whether he plays] I’ll wait until the end of play today on.”
The Rangers gaffer needs to send a good message to the rest of his squad and although Morelos is an important player, one who scored 29 goals last season, Gerrard needs to put him on the bench.
The 24-year-old – a £1 million signing three years ago [The Times] – can’t simply put in some effort during training and then get recalled automatically, especially after new boy Kemar Roofe scored against Killie last week.
If Gerrard starts with one up front, which he probably will, then it has to be Roofe, not Morelos.
