Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has named his “ultimate 5-a-side team” after appearing on Jamie Carragher’s ‘Greatest Game’ podcast – and the veteran former England star has named Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard in his dream team.
The Ibrox number 9 appeared on the Liverpool icon’s podcast to discuss his glittering career, picking out five of the best he played with so far.
As well as a place for his current boss at Ibrox – and former England teammate Gerrard – Defoe has picked former Spurs duo Ledley King and Luka Modric, Wayne Rooney and ex-England keeper David James.
Looking at who Defoe has played with over his career, there aren’t any real surprises in his team although the inclusion of King might raise some eyebrows.
Despite the former Spurs defender’s injury woes, when he was fit he was a fantastic centre-back.
With Defoe taking up a role as part of Gerrard’s coaching team at Rangers this summer, combined with his playing duties, the respect the veteran has for the manager is abundantly clear.
The veteran is likely to find his gametime limited this season as he wraps up his playing career and kicks off life in coaching but he will still have an important role for Rangers this season.
Defoe’s goals proved vital at times last season in the title race for Rangers and the former England star will be expected to contibute a few more this season.
