Rangers may look to bring a creative midfielder to Ibrox this summer.
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told The Times that he thinks the club will attempt to sign a number 10 this summer amid concerns over a lack of creativity.
The Gers only managed a 1-1 draw at home with Kilmarnock on Saturday, as Alfredo Morelos rescued a point after Conor McAleny’s opener.
Rangers have struggled of late, drawing at Hibernian before a home defeat to Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, and Saturday’s draw – coupled with Celtic’s win over Dundee on Sunday – has effectively ended the title race.
Gerrard has come in for major criticism of late, but it’s director of football Mark Allen who has been slated the most, with many unhappy with the squad assembled at Ibrox.
Rangers appear to have a whole host of workmanlike midfielders, but they don’t appear to have that real, game-changing ability needed when teams come to Ibrox to defend and frustrate.
Fans didn’t understand why that problem wasn’t addressed in January, and Gerrad has now come out and discussed the situation in light of some underwhelming attacking displays.
Gerrard has admitted that Rangers did look at such a signing in January, but now predicts that a creative player may well be signed this summer, vowing to make the squad more competitive for next season.
“It’s definitely an area we are looking at and were looking at before,” said Gerrard. “I predict that could change in the short-term, in the next window. I need to finish the season strongly with what we’ve got available right now, try and get as close as we can, then I’ll do everything in my power to make the 11, the squad, stronger and more competitive next year.
“That’s what the supporters want to hear and I can almost guarantee I’ll make that happen because we’ve identified people and players that will help and improve the situation,” he added.
