Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has personally called Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez to discuss an offer to join the Premier League side during the January transfer window.

That’s according to Gerard Romero, who reports on his Twitch channel that Gerrard wants another reunion after signing Philippe Coutinho. The Villans acquired the Brazilian on loan from Barcelona with an option to purchase Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate for £33m.

Now, Gerrard wants to add another of his former Anfield colleagues to the Villa Park ranks in Suarez. The Villa boss and Uruguayan forward played 95 games together between 2011 and 2014. They also connected for 19 goals over 7,816-minutes across all competitions.

Aston Villa have made Suarez an offer to now join Gerrard’s mission in the January transfer window from Atletico Madrid. He is out of contract at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in June after only penning a two-year deal upon joining from Barcelona for £5.5m in 2020.

Suarez also has offers from Brazilian sides Palmeiras, Corinthians and Atletico Mineiro, plus an unnamed Arabian club. But the 128-cap international has so far rejected their proposals to focus on Aston Villa’s and Gerrard’s interest this month.

Aston Villa can make another statement with Atletico Madrid’s Suarez transfer

Aston Villa can make yet another statement on Gerrard’s transfer pull by convincing Suarez to leave Atletico Madrid during January. Marca reported in October that the striker wanted a new contract with the La Liga title-holders as he believes he can still compete at the top.

The Colchoneros leadership have not moved to satisfy his request, however. Even though they acknowledge he still has a natural striker’s instinct and would be expensive to replace.

Atletico Madrid are cautious over giving Suarez a new contract as they want to ensure his body lasts the season. He has so far featured in 27 games and has scored nine times so far this term. But the Uruguayan has only started 19 of his appearances in all competitions.

Nonetheless, Gerrard wants to reunite with Suarez and seal a transfer to Aston Villa for the Atletico Madrid star. Adding another weapon to his attack that Colchoneros manager Diego Simeone proclaimed last year, via quotes by Eurosport, after scoring against Osasuna:

“Suarez has so much experience, and who better than him to resolve a game like that when it looked to be slipping away from us. Suarez showed incredible spirit. He has not been scoring recently, but he kept on coming close.”
