Steven Gerrard has revealed what Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp texted him after leaving Rangers for Aston Villa last week.
The 41-year-old was unveiled as the new Aston Villa manager today, after three-and-a-half years as Rangers boss.
Gerrard, who had an iconic playing career at Liverpool, goes back to Anfield with the Villans on December 11.
That’ll be an emotional day for the former midfielder, particularly given the tentative speculation about him replacing Klopp on Merseyside in 2024.
But the pair have a solid relationship with another and Gerrard has revealed that the German coach has promised him a ‘big hug’ before the clash at Anfield next month.
He said: “I bump into him regularly when he walks his dogs, we live in a similar area.
“He’s a great man and coach, Liverpool are very lucky to have him at the helm so long may that continue.
“He sent me a message and he said he’s looking forward to a big hug on the side on December 11 so that’s something to look forward to.”

As mentioned, there is some talk about Gerrard potentially becoming the next Liverpool boss after Klopp.
But the man himself lent zero credibility to that theory, telling the press conference today: “I don’t think this press conference should be about any other club but Aston Villa… I’m all in and I can promise our supporters that’s the case. It’s a real honor to be here.”
Aston Villa fans will love those sentiments because, despite saying the same thing about Rangers, Gerrard won’t be going anywhere soon.
He is a serial winner and if he claims that he’s fully invested in the Villa project, that’s going to be the case.
