Rangers should be looking to bring another striker to Ibrox this summer.
Rangers continued their summer transfer business earlier this week by landing Lassana Coulibaly and Umar Sadiq, taking their summer influx to nine players.
The Gers have now added Allan McGregor, Jon Flanagan, Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria, Jamie Nurphy, Coulibaly and Sadiq in what has been a busy summer under new boss Steven Gerrard.
It’s unclear just how many more signings Rangers are looking for, but Gerrard must be looking to add one more striker to his ranks – even after signing Sadiq on loan from Roma.
Sadiq has potential; the 21-year-old is tall, athletic and skilful, but just seven goals in 28 senior games, the Nigerian hasn’t yet proven that he can be relied upon to be a consistent goalscorer.
With Eduardo Herrera primed for the Rangers exit, that would leave Gerrard with Sadiq and Alfredo Morelos – recently linked with a move away from Ibrox – as his only senior strikers.
Unless Gerrard has big plans for youngster Zak Rudden, then Rangers shouldn’t be looking to head into the season with just Morelos and Sadiq – 22 and 21 respectively – as his strikers.
Rangers must look to make another key signing with another striker, even if it’s a cheap move or loan deal for a player like Jason Cummings, just to beef up Gerrard’s options and ensure that Rangers aren’t left short in attack.
Celtic’s dominance is in part down to their three strikers Moussa Dembele, Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths, and if Rangers have real designs on challenging the Bhoys, then they shouldn’t be prepared to just head in to the season with a two-man strikeforce.
