South Africa fans have taken to Twitter to bizarrely call on Steven Gerrard to hand Bongani Zungu the captaincy at Ibrox, after he scored in the win over São Tomé and Príncipe yesterday.
Gerrard’s latest signing buried a header from a corner to secure a 2-0 win, leading to a number of South Africa fans to flock to Rangers’ official Twitter account with the odd demand.
Why is it odd? Well, Zungu only arrived at Ibrox on October 5th, and has made just one appearance for the Gers so far. What kind of message would it send out to the rest of the squad if Gerrard made him captain!
Additionally, the 28-year-old is only on a season-long loan – how many loan players do you see get given the captaincy?
Hopefully, the South Africa fans are joking and are just in jubilant fashion after watching their country win.

If not, then their demand to Gerrard is truly baffling, to say the least.
While he might not earn the captaincy, Zungu has definitely made an impressive start to his Rangers career.

He played 45 minutes of the 8-0 win over Hamilton recently, looking composed on the ball as he made 35 passes, including three long-range pings according to SofaScore.
Let’s see what the South Africa fans have been saying…
