Rangers are set to make a move for a new striker in January, with Steven Gerrard poised to move on from summer signing Umar Sadiq at the first possible opportunity.

The Gers brought in Sadiq and Kyle Lafferty over the summer, but neither have impressed in the Rangers attack this season, leaving Alfredo Morelos as the only reliable striker at Ibrox.

Gerrard is subsequently set to focus on signing a striker in January, and one surprise name emerged as a target on Monday; Gillingham’s Tom Eaves.

Sky Sports report that Rangers are keen to lure Eaves to Ibrox, but face competition from Championship sides Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End.

Eaves, 26, has smashed 13 goals in 21 games for Gillingham this season, and has become one of League One’s top strikers during his time with the club, starring as a big, physical target man.

The Liverpool-born hitman could really fancy playing under Gerrard, and Rangers moving to sign him next month could also frustrate one of their biggest rivals in the Scottish Premiership.

The Scottish Sun recently reported that Hibernian are keen to sign Eaves, with Neil Lennon looking to bolster his attack by adding the former Bolton Wanderers man in January.

Rangers would love to annoy Lennon with a move for a striker, and could score a major win over the Edinburgh club by beating them in the race to sign Eaves when the transfer window opens.
