Gerrard chose the latter, bringing on striker Jermain Defoe.
It took the former England international just minutes to make his mark.
Latching onto a pass from Ryan Jack, Defoe finished in clinical fashion to seal a 4-2 win for Rangers.
It was a big moment for the Gers, beating Aberdeen for the first time in four attempts under Gerrard.
Gerrard would have been forgiven for bringing on another defender to try and see the game out at 3-2, but he showed his commitment to attacking football by going for the victory.
It proved to be a managerial masterclass and Rangers are still very much in the title race.
