Liverpool head into the final game of the season knowing that they have an outside chance of becoming Premier League champions, but they also know that they will need to call in a few favours in order to win the league.

Luckily for the Reds, the fixtures have fallen in such a way in that they could be helped over the line by a few former Anfield favourites

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa face Manchester City this weekend, while Liverpool face Wolves, and there are a few former Liverpool players who could have a say in Liverpool winning the Premier League title.

The most obvious former Liverpool player who could help the Reds win the league.

Steven Gerrard will be in the dugout for Aston Villa this weekend, and he’ll be well aware that a result at the Etihad will put Liverpool’s title fate into their hands.

Gerrard, of course, never won the Premier League for Liverpool as a player, but he could now win the league for the Reds as a manager.

Danny Ings

Another former Liverpool man at Aston Villa, Danny Ings certainly has the talent to be a thorn in City’s side this weekend.

Ings may not have an incredibly strong affinity for Liverpool after a difficult few years at Anfield, but he may want to get his own back on Manchester City after being linked with a move to the Etihad last summer.

Ings knows how to find the back of the net, and he could hand Liverpool a real boost with a goal or two this weekend.

Philippe Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho has been a star for Aston Villa since arriving in January, and now, he could play a part in winning the league for his former club Liverpool.

The Brazilian has history of scoring decisive goals against Manchester City late in a Premier League season – scoring a fantastic goal back in 2014 to hand Liverpool the advantage in the title race, and he could repeat the trick here.

Conor Coady

A former Liverpool academy graduate, Conor Coady will be captaining Wolves this weekend against the Reds.

Coady will, of course, be wanting to get a win over his former club, but depending on how his afternoon goes, he could well play a part in helping the Reds win the league if he has a torrid afternoon.

Ki-Jana Hoever

Ki-Jana Hoever left Liverpool for Wolves in 2020, and with Wolves’ season being all-but over, he could play this weekend.

Hoever hasn’t played since March after being criticised by Bruno Lage, and if he is fielded against the Anfield outfit, you have to feel as though that would play into the Reds’ hands.

Hoever is an inexperienced option at right-back, and it’s fair to say that Luis Diaz or Sadio Mane could have an absolute field day with this young man if he starts on Sunday.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling will be looking to win the Premier League on Sunday with Manchester City, but a bad afternoon for the Englishman could hand the title to Liverpool.

Riyad Mahrez’s missed penalty last weekend aided Liverpool’s title chances, and Sterling has been known to miss gilt-edged opportunities in the past – perhaps most famously against Lyon in the 2020 Champions League quarter-finals.

Sterling will be desperate to keep his former club away from the Premier League trophy, but if he doesn’t play well against Aston Villa, he could play a part in handing the title to the Reds.
