Aston Villa could see Ludwig Augustinsson cancel his loan transfer from Sevilla after failing to win Unai Emery over. The defender is weighing up his future ahead of the January sales.

That is according to Birmingham Live, which reports Augustinsson is considering tearing up his temporary terms with the Villans. He has seldom featured since moving to England in a season-long loan deal in July as former boss Steven Gerrard sought to improve his options.

Aston Villa paid Sevilla £500k to hire the Sweden defender for a year and hold an option to buy him. A permanent move would cost the Villa Park outfit £4m in 2023 but it is now very unlikely to materialise. The 28-year-old has only featured in three fixtures for 132 minutes.

Emery snubbing the left-back for his 20-man matchday side as Aston Villa met Liverpool on Boxing Day has left Augustinsson questioning his future in claret-and-blue. It was the first Premier League meeting that the 50-cap star was not involved in to some extent whilst fit.

Augustinsson missed the final five Premier League games of Gerrard’s reign after suffering a hamstring injury in October. But he returned to the bench for Emery’s debut at the helm at home to Manchester United and played in the closing stages at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Augustinsson’s role at Tottenham could be key for his future on loan to Aston Villa

To now not make Emery’s matchday side as Aston Villa returned to Premier League action after the World Cup has left Augustinsson to question seeing out the remainder of his loan transfer from Sevilla. So, his role away at Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday could be telling.

If Emery again snubs Augustinsson from his next matchday side, the writing may be on the walls for his future. The Swede has only started one of his two Premier League matches so far, as well. He started his only clash in the Carabao Cup as Villa lost at Manchester United.

Augustinsson quitting Aston Villa and returning to Sevilla could also see Emery lose both of the players that Gerrard hired on loan this summer. Birmingham Live also reports that Jan Bednarek may return to Southampton in January and that the Villans are happy for him to.
