Rangers are still fighting to keep James Tavernier and
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has told the Glasgow Evening Times that it would be ‘stupid and naïve’ not to have targets in mind to replace James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos.
The Gers have been busy in the summer transfer market, bringing in George Edmundson, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Greg Stewart, Jake Hastie, Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo.
Rangers will now look to move players out of Ibrox to trim the numbers in Gerrard’s squad, with a number of fringe players potentially moving on.
Graham Dorrans, Eros Grezda, Kyle Lafferty and Jason Holt look poised to go, and Rangers will be fighting to make sure that Tavernier and Morelos don’t follow them.
Rangers’ star duo are bound to attract major interest, especially from Premier League clubs, given that Tavernier hit 17 goals and 20 assists from right back last season, and Morelos notched 30 goals and 11 assists.
Those numbers would be hard to replace, and whilst there doesn’t appear to be anything close to imminent in terms of them leaving Ibrox, Gerrard has commented on their futures.
Gerrard has suggested that every player has a price, but it would have to be an ‘eye-opening’ bid to make Rangers even think about selling.
Gerrard did though hint that Rangers already have targets in mind, but would only move if both players move on, suggesting it would be ‘very stupid and naïve’ not to be looking for potential replacements, just in case the worst happens.
“Every player has a price. But if bids come in that are nowhere near acceptable then the answer is going to be a straight no,” said Gerrard. “If a bid comes in that’s an eye opener or if it’s at the level we rate the player we’ll have a decision to make and I’ll make it there and then.”
“We’ll have targets ready if Tav or Alfredo was to go. I think it would be very stupid and naive of me if I wasn’t prepared,” he added.
