Steven Gerrard has revealed that Rangers hitman Jermain Defoe has suffered a hamstring injury.
The Gers thumped Motherwell in a pre-season friendly last night but Defoe didn’t emerge unscathed from it.
Speaking to Premier Sport, Gerrard said that the 37-year-old star’s injury is the only negative to an otherwise brilliant night for Rangers, but he wasn’t sure about the severity of it yet.
He said: “The only disappointment from tonight is obviously Jermain’s injury. We know what it is. We believe it is a hamstring.”
Defoe had only come on for Morelos after the hour mark and was looking lively.
Rangers kick off their 2020-21 campaign on Saturday week with a tricky visit to Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.
And it’s a big blow for the light Blues if Defoe – who scored one more league goal than Morelos last season – is unavailable for the start.
Gerrard’s side need a fast and furious start to the season, with Celtic going for 10-in-a-row, and an injury of this scale, this early, isn’t ideal.
But the Rangers boss revealed that he could sign a striker between now and then, in light of Defoe’s potential absence.
He added, when asked if he could bring in another marksman: “Yes, possibly. I think first and foremost we need to just stay calm and find out the extent of the injury and how long its going to be.”
