Steven Gerrard has described Calvin Bassey’s performance for Rangers against Standard Liege on Thursday.
Bassey entered the game in the 43rd minute after an injury to Borna Barisic, making his debut in the Europa League proper.
The 20-year-old had only ever played five times beforehand at senior level – all as a Rangers player – but was lauded by large numbers of Gers supporters afterwards.
And Gerrard, too, was impressed by Bassey, a player he signed on a free from Leicester City in the summer transfer window.
The Rangers manager said, via the club’s official Twitter page on Friday:
Bassey is on stand-by for his seventh career outing, against Livingston on Sunday, with Barisic ‘a doubt’, in Gerrard’s words.
The 40-year-old added:
Rangers beat Standard 2-0 on their own turf, getting their Europa League campaign off to the perfect start.
Goals from James Tavernier – a penalty – and Kemar Roofe – who lobbed the ‘keeper from inside his own half – secured the points for the Gers.
