Steven Gerrard feels Liverpool cannot hold the talented youngster back.
Steven Gerrard is settling into his role as coach of Liverpool’s under-19 side, leading their UEFA Youth League campaign.
The Reds have already qualified for the last 16 and host Spartak Moscow this week.
Liverpool’s efforts are helped by the presence of youngster Rhian Brewster, who recently fired England to under-17 World Cup glory.
Brewster has only been able to play in three of the five group games so far due to his World Cup involvement, but Gerrard said that Liverpool are desperate to get him involved even if it means dropping others who have performed well.
He told the club website: “We had to put Bobby Adekanye on the bench in the last game, and he didn’t deserve to be on the bench. But you’ve got Rhian [Brewster] returning, who’s just won a World Cup, who played well before he left, and they’re the decisions you’ve got to make.”
Brewster has one goal in three matches in the competition, and four goals in eight under-23 matches, plus six assists.
He finished as top scorer as England won the under-17 World Cup in India, and is being tipped for the very top.
Gerrard added he was impressed with Brewster’s attitude, along with teammate Ben Woodburn, and they did not see the drop down from under-23 to under-19 level as any sort of demotion.
He said: “I think the likes of Ben, Rhian and the other players are actually enjoying being around the group, being around their own friends, and I think they also realise that the UEFA Youth League, the club takes it very, very seriously.”
