Liverpool comprehensively swept aside West Ham on Saturday evening in the Premier League.

Steven Gerrard has blasted West Ham United striker Javier Hernandez on BT Sport Football by comparing the Mexican forward to Liverpool ace Roberto Firmino.

Gerrard’s former side Liverpool secured an excellent three points at the London Stadium on Saturday evening, as they strolled past Slaven Bilic’s helpless Hammers with a 4-1 victory.

A brace from in-form summer signing Mo Salah sunk West Ham, while Joel Matip and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also got their names on the score sheet, with Manuel Lanzini scoring for the east Londoners.

Speaking on BT Sport after the match, Liverpool legend Gerrard was quoted by BT Sport Football’s Twitter account as saying that Hernandez’s lack of effort was obvious when compared to Brazil international Firmino.

“He [Firmino] sets the press for them [Liverpool]. He works his socks off,” Gerrard said. “If you compare Firmino, today, to Javier Hernandez, it’s just two completely different players.

“One doesn’t care, one doesn’t run, one is lazy. The other one runs his socks off, starts all the press off, fantastic first touch, makes things happen, strong, hard to play against, everything you want in a centre-forward.”

Hernandez, 29, is yet to find his form at the London Stadium after joining West Ham in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen, scoring just four goals in 13 games.

In contrast, Firmino has played a part in both scoring and creating goals with seven strikes of his own and four assists in 17 league and cup appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Both players are set to leave their clubs this week to meet up with their national sides, with Hernandez’s Mexico facing Belgium and Poland while Firmino’s Brazil take on Japan and England.
