Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker was a rock at the back as Germany coasted to a 4-0 win over Group G rivals Portugal.
Germany player ratings
Manuel Neuer 7 – Wasn’t called upon much but did make some great saves, Ronaldo’s free-kick towards the end for one.
Jerome Boateng 6 – Had a pretty quiet game and didn’t have too many touches on the ball.
Mats Hummels 8 – Showed exactly why he is a very sought-after defender right now, extremely solid at the back and contributed with a great goal.
Per Mertesacker 7 – Very solid game from the Arsenal man and, more importantly, no mistakes.
Benedikt Howedes 6 – Much like Boateng, was never really called into serious action, but worked well to keep the clean sheet.
Philipp Lahm 7 – Played well and captained the side excellently playing from the anchor role.
Sami Khedira 8 – Looked like he had never spent most of the season injured, excellent performance dominating midfield.
Toni Kroos 7 – Part of that midfield dynamo and played a vital cog in a very well oiled machine.
Thomas Muller 9 – Two tales for this man. Over-acting was nothing to be proud of, but his hat-trick showed how really good this man is.
Mesut Ozil 6 – Didn’t impose himself throughout the game and went missing a lot.
Mario Gotze 8 – A great performance, showed pace and enthusiasm. Won the penalty to start the onslaught.
