The midfielder will join Liverpool this summer from RB Leipzig.
RB Leipzig star Timo Werner sat down for an exclusive interview with German media outlet Welt, and discussed Naby Keita’s impending switch to Liverpool, hinting that he himself might just have to join one of Europe’s major clubs if he is to go on and become world class.
The Guinea international will join the Reds this summer from the Bundesliga outfit, in a deal believed to be worth in the region of £54 million, according to the Guardian, and his arrival on Merseyside is expected to coincide with a new era of success for Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Werner, though, insisted that Keita is not yet world class, when speaking exclusively to German publication Welt, and insisted that he might have to emulate his former teammate’s move away from RB Leipzig if he is to truly fulfil his potential:
“If I want to become a great champion, I will probably have to play in a different club, I want to be honest in this sense. Naby Keita has not fully established himself with us, but he could become a top player at Liverpool. My future? I still have 4-5 years to learn in order to become a world-class player.”
The 23-year-old really impressed in the Bundesliga this season, showcasing his talent on a consistent basis, but if he is to be a success in England with Liverpool, he will have to raise his game to even higher levels, as Werner said, and become a really influential figure for Klopp’s side.
