Eric Dier made his Bayern Munich debut on Wednesday night, coming off the bench against Union Berlin after signing from Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur have been out of action for 11 days now with the 2-2 draw at Manchester United their last outing.

Spurs are busy preparing for a return to action though as they host Manchester City in the FA Cup on Friday with Ange Postecoglou plotting Pep Guardiola’s downfall.

Tottenham fans likely can’t wait for more ‘Angeball’ but supporters may have seen one recently-sold player in action on Wednesday night.

Eric Dier came off the bench to make his Bayern Munich debut against Union Berlin, replacing the injured Dayot Upamecano at half-time.

Spurs recently allowed the centre back to leave the club earlier this month, paving the way for a reunion with Harry Kane.

Tottenham snapped up Radu Dragusin from Genoa and were happy to Dier to leave the club as he just didn’t fit into Postecoglou’s plans.

Dier adds depth to Bayern’s back line and he was called upon last night, playing 45 minutes in a 1-0 home win over Union.

The German media seemed to be fairly impressed with Dier’s display as he helped Bayern keep a clean sheet in a crucial victory.

German TV channel ran rated Dier at three out of five, with one being the best and five being at the other end of the scale.

“The winter newcomer from Tottenham replaced Upamecano in central defence after the break and introduced himself a little later with a successful tackle. Afterwards, a safe appearance on his debut, as the visitors’ attack rarely challenges him.”

Spox went with a three out of five too, as did Tageszeitung as they reflected on a ‘solid’ debut from the former Spurs man.

“Came on at half-time to replace the injured Upamecano and made his debut for FC Bayern. Dier immediately brought luck to his new colleagues: less than a minute later, after a long spell of possession – including contact with the ball from Dier – it was 1-0,” said Spox.

“Made his first appearance after Upamecano’s injury. Celebrated a solid debut without any major upsets,” added Tageszeitung.

Abendzeitung went with the exact same rating, praising Dier for nullifying a chance from Union striker Chris Bedia.

“Bayern debut for the English central defender: Dier came on as a substitute in the second half for the injured Upamecano. Decent performance, save in the penalty area from Chris Bedia.”

Sport went with the lowest rating of the lot, giving Dier a 3.5 whilst suggesting that he looked a little rusty after barely playing for Tottenham this season.

“Made his Bundesliga debut in the second half. Definitely gave some impetus with the ball from behind. He noticeably lacked competition practice in duels,” they wrote.

Some of those ratings were actually higher than Kane’s as the England striker struggled to make an impact against Union.

Upamecano’s injury is likely to keep him out for weeks and that means Dier may now be primed for a run in the Bayern side.

Augsburg and Monchengladbach are next up for Bayern, but then it’s a huge title clash against Leverkusen on the 10th of February and Dier will need to be on his game in the coming weeks as an opportunity to shine arrives.
