Celtic are set to seal the signing of Marvin Compper.

Celtic are closing in on the signing of Red Bull Leipzig defender Marvin Compper, with SkySports reporting he has had a medical ahead of his £1 million switch.

Compper reinforces Celtic’s backline, which has been stretched with injury this season.

So why does he want to leave one of Germany’s top teams?

German football expert Raphael Honigstein says there is a simple answer. He told BBC Sport: “He has just lost his position to younger, more agile players.

“He’s at an age where he doesn’t get any benefit from sitting on the bench, so I can understand why he’s taking the opportunity to be a starter in a team that’s going to win titles.”

Compper will not be eligible to play for Celtic in the Europa League, but is likely to play a crucial role in the second half of the season for the club.

Celtic will be looking to tighten their grip on the Scottish Premiership and record another title win as they continue their march towards 10 league titles.

Compper is a practical if not inspiring signing, and has experience Celtic could find invaluable.
