Liverpool face Roma on Tuesday night in the first leg of their semi-final clash.
Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has told The Times that his old side can win the Champions League as they prepare to face Roma at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s men booked their place in the last four with a superb 5-1 aggregate victory over Premier League champions Manchester City, as they beat Pep Guardiola’s side 3-0 at Anfield before winning 2-1 at the Etihad.
The likes of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have all shone in the Champions League this season, and Klopp will be counting on his front three to do the business at Anfield in order to take a lead to Rome next week.
Houllier, who managed Liverpool between 1998 and 2004 and guided the Reds to UEFA Cup success in 2001, claimed Liverpool are more than capable of holding aloft the Champions League trophy.
“I like the way the team plays. You have to be in the right shape and fresh at the right period of the season and maybe Manchester City were going through a dip [in the quarter-final],” Houllier said.
“But I don’t like to take anything off Liverpool because Jürgen’s team did so well, tactically and in terms of intensity towards the game. In English football, the intensity is so high that it really stifles the opposition and, for me, I think they can win it.”
Klopp rested Roberto Firmino, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and all five stars are likely to return to the starting line-up against Roma.
Roma beat Barcelona 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico and Liverpool must take a lead to Italy if they are to stand any chance of gaining a place in the final. Bayern Munich take on Real Madrid on Wednesday, before the final takes place on May 26 in Kiev.
