Liverpoo legend Steven Gerrard has confirmed himself that he is in talks with Rangers.
Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has offered Steven Gerrard his words of wisdom in an interview with BeIN Sports, and reckons taking the Rangers job will only improve Gerrard’s development as a coach.
Gerrard, 37, confirmed to Gary Lineker on Tuesday night during BT Sport’s coverage of Real Madrid’s Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich that he had held talks with the Gers.
Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Graeme Murty earlier this week, with assistant Jimmy Nicholl and first-team coach Jonatan Johansson taking over until the end of the season.
Houllier gave Gerrard his Liverpool debut almost 20 years ago in a Premier League match against Blackburn, and offereed advice to the former Liverpool and England captain ahead of taking the job.
“He’s got to make sure that he has enough money to buy good players,” Houllier said. “It is better to play with good players than bad players. Be honest, be yourself, never forget that leadership is a transfer of emotions.
“If he’s sad the team will be sad. If he’s upbeat the team will be upbeat. If he believes in himself and the players, they will know that and they will respond to that. If he takes on Rangers, he will have more responsibility.
“It will be better in his development to become a coach”.
Gerrard is yet to step foot into any senior management role since retiring from professional football in 2016, following a short stint in Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy.
He turned down the manager’s role at MK Dons last year in order to make a career out of punditry, as well as becoming manager of Liverpool’s Under-18 side.
It remains to be seen if Gerrard will indeed take on the role as Rangers manager, which will see him go up against former Reds boss Brendan Rodgers when the two Old Firm rivals come to blows next season.
