Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has seemingly recommended that Tottenham Hotspur target Frenkie De Jong should stay where he is right now.

In comments reported by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has suggested that Tottenham target Frenkie De Jong may be better off staying with Ajax while he continues to develop his game.

De Jong is one of the most exciting talents playing anywhere in Europe right now, and that is reflected in the clubs that are reportedly chasing his signature.

The Daily Express recently reported that Spurs plan to keep scouting the youngster over the coming months, while Barcelona have also been long-term admirers of the midfielder. Mundo Deportivo have since suggested that Tottenham have seen a £45 million bid rejected.

And after playing alongside De Jong for The Netherlands in their Nations League clash with France on Sunday, Wijnaldum suggested that additional pressure must not be put on the starlet’s shoulders, while he also hinted that a move away from the Eredivisie side could be a gamble at this stage of his career.

“A lot has been written about him lately, so I’ve been watching how he plays at Ajax. He did exactly the same on the training with us. His way of playing football fits very well with our game,” he said, as reported by De Telegraaf.

“He is doing very well now, but we have often had Dutch players who first played very well, but later became less. Often it is said: he can do this and that he can become so good. Frenkie is 21 years old, anything can happen. Maybe he also gets a lesser period if he switches abroad, you also have to look at how that will work out. For now it is good. We hope as a team and actually as the whole of the Netherlands that he will continue to develop.”

While Wijnaldum has warned De Jong about a move – without referencing any particular club – Tottenham can point to the success that they have had with several ex-Ajax players to highlight how De Jong would be in safe hands if he joined Spurs.

The Reds midfielder is right that picking the right move will be critical for De Jong’s development, but if Spurs are the team that find themselves at the front of the queue, then perhaps he should feel confident that joining Mauricio Pochettino’s side could be as fantastic for him as he could prove for them.
