Georginio Wijnaldum moved from Newcastle United to Liverpool last summer.

Georginio Wijnaldum has told the Guardian that he he was really disappointed with his time at Newcastle United.

Wijnaldum was brought to Newcastle last summer, and in his initial discussions about joining the club Steve McClaren promised the Dutch international that he wanted to build a team which was capable of competing for the Premier League title.

However, things did not go according to plan, and Newcastle were relegated from the top flight, after a disastrous campaign.

And Wijnaldum said: “Before I went to Newcastle I spoke with the manager and the people there and they had big plans to bring good players in and play for titles. I was really disappointed because I wanted to achieve something with Newcastle. Even if it was not a title I wanted to help the club get back to fifth-to-10th place to start with, and maybe get the club back into Europe again.

“Unfortunately it didn’t go that way. It went totally wrong. That was the biggest disappointment for me last season.”

Wijnaldum was one of Newcastle’s better performers throughout the campaign, after scoring 11 goals in his debut season in English football.

Although the 26-year-old was accused of being slightly inconsistent, he did show promise at St. James’ Park.

Wijnaldum’s performance caught the eye of a number of Premier League clubs, with Liverpool moving to sign the goalscoring midfielder last summer.

Wijnaldum has already made a positive impression at Liverpool, and seems to have an important role to play for Jurgen Klopp’s title challenging side.
