Georginio Wijnaldum failed to score an away goal in the Premier League for Newcastle United last season.
Georginio Wijnaldum has complained in the Telegraph that Newcastle United fans made him the scapegoat for their poor away performances last season.
Wijnaldum was regularly accused of going missing away from St. James’ Park by Magpies supporters.
And the midfielder has continued to be criticised for his poor form on the road, since he moved to Liverpool last summer.
However, the attacking-midfielder insists that his performances do not dip when he is away from familiar surroundings.
“That is people’s opinion. I think I also play good in away games, especially this season,” the Dutch international said.
“It is funny because last season we didn’t perform at a level as a whole team in away games for Newcastle but I was the only one who got the complaints. It is a team thing and no-one can do it by themselves.”
Wijnaldum has never scored a goal in the Premier League in an away match, for either Newcastle or Liverpool.
The 26-year-old was relegated with Newcastle last term, but things have been more productive for him this time around.
Wijnaldum has played an important role, as Liverpool have pushed for a top four spot so far this season.
Liverpool are currently in the Champions League qualification spaces, with their next match coming against Burnley.
