Lewis Hamilton was fastest for Ferrari in FP1 ahead of the British Grand Prix — the first time he’s topped a session since joining the team.
His best lap put him just two-hundredths ahead of Lando Norris, coming on his second push. The first had already seen him set a fastest first sector before he backed out.

It’s an encouraging start for a driver hoping to take his first podium in red. This is Hamilton’s 12th attempt for Ferrari, and the team—still without a win since removing Fred Vasseur last year—are under pressure to deliver.

Oscar Piastri, the championship leader, took third, while George Russell split Ferrari by putting his Mercedes in fifth. Max Verstappen finished the session down in 10th.
George Russell concerned by Lewis Hamilton’s tyre wear at Silverstone British Grand Prix
After qualifying simulations, many drivers focused on race pace. Hamilton and Russell crossed paths on their long runs, and the Mercedes driver noticed something troubling.
“His inside shoulders look far cleaner than ours at the rear,” Russell reported over team radio — a sign Ferrari may have an edge in tyre degradation.
Rain is expected during qualifying, but the forecast for the race is dry. Last year, wet conditions helped Hamilton win a dramatic victory. This time, he may not need the weather’s help if Ferrari remain strong.

Ferrari have been asking drivers to lift and coast to protect the underfloor plank — an issue that led to Hamilton’s disqualification in China. A new floor debuted in Austria, but instructions to manage wear remain in place.
The team will also test a key rear suspension upgrade next week in hopes of fighting for wins after the summer break. Meanwhile, Hamilton and Leclerc disagree on whether the SF-25’s brakes are a problem area — another topic Ferrari will investigate during testing at Mugello.
