George Russell is learning quickly what comes with being a Mercedes Formula 1 driver in the current era.
One of the constants over the past few seasons has been the team’s struggle with car consistency and understanding exactly what makes their package competitive from one weekend to the next.

Just two weeks earlier in Canada, Russell had taken pole and converted it into a comfortable win, holding off Max Verstappen in the process.
But at the Red Bull Ring, he found himself more than a minute behind race winner Lando Norris, with Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls just a few seconds further back after pulling off a one-stop strategy.
Yet it wasn’t the result that had people talking inside Mercedes. Attention quickly shifted to something Russell had said earlier in the weekend — something that reportedly caught the team off guard.
George Russell’s comments about the 2026 Mercedes seat surprised staff
Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Tom Clarkson referenced a Russell interview early in the weekend: “Let’s talk about the story coming into this weekend, where George Russell on Thursday said, well, I’ll briefly quote him, he told Sky Sports, ‘It’s only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are going on.”

Clarkson continued: “‘Toto Wolff has made it clear to me that I’m performing as good as anybody. That’s why I have no concern about my future, but there are two seats to every team, and I guess he needs to think who those two drivers are.’”
“I was surprised that he said that. I think the team was surprised.”
George Russell’s position in the driver market could be under threat
According to the BBC’s Lawrence Barretto, Mercedes may be taking their time for a reason. He told Clarkson: “So, I put it to Toto, and Toto was like, well, we’ve got the contracts and timelines in place, so that makes me think there’s probably a contract ready to go.”
“They just haven’t put the ink on it at the minute, and that is because Toto is waiting. He’s waiting for something. He knows that, probably, George hasn’t got a lot of options elsewhere, that he would love to stay here, so he can probably afford to make George wait a little bit longer.”

Russell has performed well in 2025, picking up a win in Canada and out-qualifying teammate Alex Albon for much of the season. But Perez’s recent form has put extra pressure on him in the eyes of some within the team.
Although Verstappen’s next move remains the biggest question mark in the sport, Russell’s future could hinge on how quickly Mercedes want to finalise their 2026 lineup — and whether they feel the need to wait any longer.
