George Honeyman has told the Chronicle that he feels wearing the Sunderland captain’s armband helps him play better.

Honeyman was named as Sunderland skipper at the start of the season by Jack Ross.

Even though the midfielder does not have as much experience as some of his teammates, Ross saw his leadership qualities.

And Honeyman insists that the pressure of being his side’s leader does not worry him.

He said: “As captain I’ve got to take responsibility on my shoulders in terms of trying to get us to win games and luckily everything’s going well in that way, and long may it continue.

“I’m not bothered about the pressure or anything that it (the captaincy) brings. If anything, I feel like it makes me better.”

The youngster has scored twice and claimed three assists in League One so far this season.

Sunderland have performed well in the league so far this season, and moved into the automatic promotion spaces two weekends’ ago.
