Although Sheffield Wednesday will want to forget the result of their League Cup clash with Cambridge United as quickly as possible, it was a night to remember for one of the Owls squad.
After their dramatic victory over Aston Villa on the opening day of the Championship season, Carlos Carvalhal made several changes to his line-up for the clash against the League Two side.
Lucas Joao had put Sheffield Wednesday ahead
Despite the inclusion of several youngsters, things seemed to be going to plan for the side that reached the quarter-final of this competition last season – beating Arsenal and Newcastle along the way – as Lucas Joao opened the scoring shortly after half-time.
However, a wonder-strike from Piero Mingoia took the tie to extra-time, and with penalties looming, Luke Berry scored two minutes from the end of the additional half-hour to complete the turnaround.

While the result may have disappointed the away side, there was a sense of excitement two minutes into extra-time as George Hirst – son of Wednesday legend David Hirst – was brought on to make his debut for Carvalhal’s men.

The youngster may have been unable to get onto the scoresheet, but having previously been a Premier League target (via Daily Mail), there is no doubt that Wednesday supporters have high hopes that the academy graduate can follow in his father’s footsteps and become a club hero in the future.
