Speculation is mounting that Celtic are interested in signing Ben Foster.
The Hoops clearly need a new goalkeeper and although Joe Hart is heavily linked, so too is another veteran former England international.
According to Sky Sports News, the Watford stopper is on Celtic’s radar.
Foster is 38 but after helping the Hornets to Premier League promotion last season, could be a very good stop-gap until the Bhoys can find somebody a little more…..permanent.
Rangers finished 25 points clear of Celtic last term and although Vasilis Barkas had a pretty poor first season in Glasgow, you can’t blame the Gers’ supremacy under Steven Gerrard solely on him.
Gerrard’s side are favourites to defend their Premiership title next season.
This is the 41-year-old’s first job in senior management and he is proving himself one hell of a head coach – and no doubt Foster himself will be impressed.
That’s because the English goalkeeper once admitted that he was shocked how good Gerrard was as a player, until sharing a dressing room with him for England.
He said to Sportbible in March: “Like I say, I’ve played with the others for England and they were just phenomenal. They’re all different sorts of players. Honestly, I was genuinely surprised by how good Gerrard was.”
It’ll take a while before the Liverpool icon is as influential in the dugout as he was on the field, but he’s getting there.
To have ruined Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid to win a league title at the age of 40 is very impressive, not to mention the Ibrox club’s progress in the Europa League these past few years.
Rangers kick off their Champions League qualification bid with a clash against Malmo next week and you wouldn’t put it past Gerrard orchestrating a long-awaited return among Europe’s elite, either.
