Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Connor Wickham suffered a nightmare while playing for Preston last night.

What’s the story?

Well, after he was released by the Eagles at the end of last season, Preston decided to hand Wickham a short-term contract following a successful trial.

The 28-year-old was making just his second appearance for the Championship outfit, after playing 25 minutes against West Brom.

Sadly, just seven minutes into last night’s 4-1 win over Cheltenham, Wickham went down injured and had to be substituted.

It was a heartbreaking moment for the ex-Sunderland man, who has suffered with niggling injuries for years now.

Preston boss Frankie McAvoy confirmed that Wickham will have a scan today to determine to significance of the damage.

In our view, Wickham could’ve been something special for the south Londoners.

After arriving at Selhurst Park in a £7m deal from Sunderland, the Englishman scored an FA Cup semi-final winner against Watford.

Wickham showed plenty of promise almost every time he stepped onto the pitch, with one display showcasing his creative side as he notched three assists in a 5-1 win over Newcastle.

Alan Pardew even mentioned him in the same breath as Harry Kane at one point (Evening Standard).

Having burst onto the scene as a wonderkid at Ipswich, much more was expected of Wickham, but injuries have truly taken their toll.

For now, let’s see what the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have been saying about Wickham…
