Speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, Dean Jones has been discussing Liverpool’s hunt for a new midfielder and their recent links to Sander Berge.

The Norwegian midfielder has been linked to Liverpool by several outlets over the past few days, and Jones has heard similar from one of his sources.

In fact, Jones has stated that Berge has genuinely been a long-term target for the Reds, claiming that he wouldn’t be overly surprised if the 24-year-old did end up at Anfield before the transfer deadline.

What’s been said?

Jones spoke about Berge and Liverpool.

“The thing is with Liverpool and midfielders, they are tempted to go out and get a midfielder, but it also goes against their strategy to panic at this time, and the fact is that at the weekend they played Elliott, Fabinho and Henderson at the start and they brought Milner on during the game,” Jones said.

“If a great deal lands at their feet then maybe they will. Someone mentioned to me Sander Berge’s name the other day, and that makes more sense than some of the links at the moment because he’s genuinely a long-term target of Liverpool’s, they just never pressed the button and he was injured for a long time. Now he’s back playing and in good form again, he’d be decent value, so that wouldn’t completely surprise me.”

Not consistent enough

Berge would be an interesting option for Liverpool, but we have to imagine that the Reds have some serious doubts about whether or not he’s the answer to their prayers.

On his day, Berge is absolutely unplayable, but far too often he’s sloppy in possession and unable to make his mark on a game.

The reality is that the 24-year-old probably isn’t better than what Liverpool already have on a game-by-game basis, with the likes of Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all set to return from injury soon, so this deal wouldn’t make the world of sense.

Berge to Liverpool is seemingly a possibility, but it’s not one we’re expecting to happen anytime soon.
