Tottenham Hotspur right back Djed Spence has been praised after making his Genoa debut in a 2-1 win over Salernitana.

Tottenham pulled off a major deal earlier this month, securing the signing of Romanian international centre back Radu Dragusin.

Dragusin had been shining for Genoa and Spurs picked him out as the ideal signing to compete with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at the back.

Tottenham almost missed out though as Bayern Munich attempted to hijack the deal before Dragusin picked a move to North London.

Spurs were able to sweeten the deal by sending right back Djed Spence to Genoa on loan – and he has now made his first appearance for the Italian side.

Spence spent the first half of the season on loan at Championship side Leeds United but was sent back to Tottenham in January.

Spurs paid £20million to sign Spence from Middlesbrough back in 2022 but really need to see him shine.

A Tottenham future is unlikely but Spurs want to get part of their money back – and another loan will hopefully help do that.

Spence started on Sunday as Genoa faced Salernitana, playing his part in a 2-1 victory as Genoa came from a goal behind.

The Italian media were encouraged by Spence’s debut display, believing that he really improved after the half-time whistle.

Genoa boss Alberto Gilardino has offered his verdict on Spence, suggesting that he ‘did well’ despite only training three times with the Genoa squad.

Gilardino noted that Spence was in London to sort out paperwork but ran hard and did his part for the team, even if he still has room for improvement.

“He trained for three days with the team because he was in London due to a bureaucratic problem,” said Gilardino. “He did well, he ran and worked with the team. He has room for improvement, but everyone was strong,” he added.

Tottenham will ultimately hope that Spence plays so well in Italy that Genoa push for a permanent move or other clubs become interested.

We can’t see Spence getting back into Ange Postecoglou’s plans at Tottenham any time soon so he really needs to seize this chance after failing to shine at Leeds.
