According to Gazetta Dello Sport, Roma want to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur.
This is an intriguing transfer rumour. Hojbjerg has enjoyed something of a renaissance at Spurs in recent weeks, but he could now be reunited with his former manager Jose Mourinho.
Hojbjerg was a favourite of Mourinho’s during his time at Spurs. He started most games under the former Chelsea boss and he was actually the first signing of the Mourinho-era.
The ex-Spurs gaffer is clearly a big fan of Hojbjerg, and he’s gone on the record to praise him in the past.
What’s been said?
Mourinho spoke very highly of Hojbjerg during his time at Spurs.
“Pierre is, first of all, very intelligent. He reads the game very well. He’s going to be a coach one day, for sure,” Mourinho said after Spurs beat Arsenal in December 2020.
“Physically he’s very, very strong and technically he’s much better than people think. Because sometimes people think the guy that is good technically is the guy that does the backheel. The guy that is good technically is the guy that does something wonderful. But these are not my words. These are words from coaches of 30, 40 years ago. Simplicity is genius.
“And the guy is so simple in everything he does with the ball. And I think he’s a phenomenal player.”

Makes sense
Some transfer rumours just make sense, and this is certainly one of them.
Mourinho adored Hojbjerg during his time at Spurs, and he’s certainly the type of player Roma could attract.
The Dane has been better in recent weeks, but with Oliver Skipp set to return to action soon, he could once again find himself out of the team.
Moving to Roma to play under his old manager would be quite a good career move for Hojbjerg.
