Rhian Brewster’s return to Liverpool on Saturday was something of a damp squib.

With Virgil van Dijk out injured, the stage was set for the 20-year-old former Reds hitman to make a big impression on his return to Anfield after joining Sheffield United earlier this month.

But it was a very difficult night up front for the Liverpool academy graduate, who managed only 18 touches before being taken off on 54 minutes.

Fabinho continued to replace Van Dijk in central defence but it was Joe Gomez who emerged from the game looking like the Premier League champions’ best centre-back, evident by how the England international gave his former team-mate very little to feed off.

Some Liverpool fans weren’t happy with the decision to sell Brewster, such is his potential, but Director of Football Michael Edwards negotiated a £23 million deal for the youngster, who had never played a Premier League game for them.

And here’s how some fans of the Merseyside club reacted to his performance last night:

It would be bonkers to automatically write off Brewster based on last night.

The context is, this was his full debut for the Blades and it probably couldn’t have come at a more difficult location, given that Jurgen Klopp’s side cruised to the title last season.
