‘Genius, brilliant’: Liverpool loanee channels Ronaldo with stunning piece of skill

Liverpool loanee Herbie Kane produced a moment of ‘genius’ during Hull City’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Birmingham on Saturday, according to Ian Holloway on EFL on Quest (27 June, 9pm).

During a 6-0 shellacking of Newcastle in January 2008, a fresh-faced, spiky haired Cristiano Ronaldo took one more giant stride towards greatness.

It was an ingenious piece of vision which set the Portuguese sensation on the way to claiming his first, and only, hat-trick in Manchester United red.

With Ronaldo seemingly shaping up to fire a trademark free-kick into the top corner, he left Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given baffled by rolling his strike underneath an airborne wall instead.

And while a Hull City loanee is unlikely to emulate the five-time Ballon D’Or winner at Anfield or elsewhere, Kane produced an effort CR7 himself would have been proud at the KCom (watch below at 10 mins).

“Oh I love this. He’s obviously seen the fact that the Birmingham wall jumps and its an absolute stroke of genius. Brilliant, young man,” beamed an always impassioned Ian Holloway after the game.

Liverpool-mad Kane grew up idolising Steven Gerrard rather than a Manchester United legend, though it remains to be seen whether there is a place for him in Jurgen Klopp’s plans in the years to come.

At the age of 21 and with his contract due to expire this summer, there is a nagging feeling that a player who moved to Anfield seven years ago might have missed the boat at the newly-crowned Premier League champions.

Though a long and successful career elsewhere awaits if Saturday’s Ronaldo-esque effort is anything to go by.
