‘Generational’: Some Everton fans think rarely-seen gem ‘has to start’ after Finch Farm footage

Everton host Watford in the Premier League on Saturday, and some fans want to see Rafa Benitez start Anthony Gordon after the winger dominated a shooting drill in training.

The Toffees posted a clip on Twitter of Gordon winning a shooting challenge at Finch Farm on Thursday. He was clearly in a confident mood before kicking a ball, telling the camera: “I’ll win”. A promise he then delivered on with six points, beating the returning Richarlison.

Gordon scored a myriad of strikes through the drill, as Duncan Ferguson put the Everton squad through their paces. The 20-year-old found the top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right corners from the edge of the box, as he tries to win a place in Benitez’s starting side.

Benitez has started Gordon in one of their eight Premier League games so far this season, ahead of hosting Watford. The England U20 international has also featured from the bench against Southampton, Aston Villa, Norwich and West Ham United.

He is yet to register a goal or an assist in the top-flight under Benitez. Gordon will want to improve his record from under Carlo Ancelotti, having assisted once in 14 appearances. He additionally failed to influence the scoring as the Toffees lost at QPR in the Carabao Cup.

Everton fans demand Benitez starts Gordon vs Watford

But some Everton fans reacted to Gordon winning the shooting drill by demanding Benitez starts the winger against Watford. That’s because they feel the Toffees product deserves a chance to cement his first-team standing under the Spaniard.

Benitez faces a slight selection dilemma against the Hornets on Saturday with Richarlison available again after a knee injury. The Brazilian will likely take Salomon Rondon’s place at striker, but Gordon will have eyes on ousting Alex Iwobi.

Gordon’s sole start of the league season so far was at Manchester United with Iwobi out with a slight injury. But the Nigerian returned to take his place on the left-wing against West Ham last weekend at Gordon’s expense.
