Everton’s disappointing season under Marco Silva means Marcel Brands may well head back into the transfer market for more reinforcements this summer.
The Toffees splashed out on the likes of Richarlison, Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne last summer, and whilst there have been positive spells, it has been a mostly underwhelming campaign.
Brands will have spotted a number of areas to improve, but the right flank has to be a priority, having failed to settle on a real option there this season.
Bernard, Ademola Lookman and Richarlison are all better on the left, whilst Theo Walcott has flattered to deceive this season, meaning a proven right winger would be ideal.
One player Everton allegedly wanted last summer was Gelson Martins, with The Telegraph reporting that Silva wanted a reunion with the speedy wide man having worked together at Sporting.
Martins chose Atletico Madrid, but having struggled there, the 23-year-old head out on loan to Monaco in January – where he has three goals and one assist in six games.
Given that he’s now showing his quality, Everton should return for Martins in the summer. His blistering pace and real end product would be a welcome addition, and he is an out-and-out right winger by trade, rather than shoe-horning somebody into that role.
Silva gave Martins his Sporting debut in 2015, so a reunion may well be appealing, and securing such an exciting attacking player would give fans hope that next season really could be one to savour for the Toffees.
